We are part of the statewide California Teacher Association (CTA) and we get services through the Mt. Hamilton UniServe (which serves the east side districts of San Jose and Milpitas) and the Santa Clara County Service Center.

We are also part of the nationwide National Educational Association, the country's largest union.

NEA Update: Obama to Address Delegates on Saturday

We celebrated the 4th of July during the Representative Assembly and later during the fireworks on the National Mall.

Main Points:
-Delegates voted to endorse Barrack Obama who will address the delegates via satellite from Montana on Saturday morning.
-Delegates voted for the new NEA Officers and Board members
-Teacher Astronaut Barbara Morgan addressed the assembly as she accepted the "Friend of Education" Award.
-Delegates debated and voted on dozens of business items.

Representative Assembly Kicks Off July 3rd

After 3 days of state CTA meetings and business, the actual NEA Representative Assembly kicks off on Thursday. One of the first things to be considered will be a vote on the endorsement of Barack Obama for President.

Berryessa Teachers head to Washington, DC for NEA

5 CTABerryessa members are headed to Washington, DC this week to attend the NEA Annual Meeting and Representative Assembly. With over 9,000 educators participating, NEA bills this as the world's largest deliberative body.

Representing us as State delegates are Joyce Singh, Manny Lopez and Joe Hermann. The local delegates are Beth Hanson and Rob Curry.

Board Extends Contract of Supt. Liebmann 4-1

It was a foregone conclusion.
Despite pleas by several of our CTAB Executive Board members at the June 26th BUSD Board of Trustees special meeting, the board went ahead and extended the contract of Marc Liebman through June 2011.

The vote was Rudy Nasol, Francine Davis, Linda Chen and David Cohen in favor and Alkesh Desai voted against the extension.

CTAB Departing President Joyce Singh let the board know that they only listen to Marc Liebman and serve him when they should be serving the needs of the teachers, students and community.

CTAB Vice-President elect Rob Curry reminded the Board mebers that they will be held accountable for their actions.

Immediately after the vote, CTAB members left the board room and there was frustration in the air and plans to look for candidates for the upcoming November School Board election in which 2 seats are up for election.

URGENT: BUSD Board to Vote on Superintendent Extension through 2011

Summerdale (Pat Park): Under the new custodian plan, there are 2 hours of no coverage during the school day. When kids get sick, either in the bathroom or in the classroom, the lack of a quick response causes unsafe conditions for students and staff.

May 2nd District Rally Hears From Assembly Members

The May 2nd District Rally may have attracted less than 100 participants, but those who attended heard insights from our 2 local state Assembly Members, Jim Beall and Joe Coto and a discourse in how we must continue lobbying the governor from CTA Board of Director Don Dawson. CTAB President Joyce Singh and BUSD Superintendent Marc Liebman likewise urged those gathered to continue calling the governor.

How to help members who receive RIF notices

Urgent: Reduction In Force Rights

In the event that the district does issue Reduction In Force (RIF) letters as we approach the March 15^th deadline, please take the following steps to protect your rights.

If you receive a layoff notice, notify the CTA/Mt. Hamilton office immediately. The CTA Mt. Ham # is 272.0601
Go to the BUSD district office and get the form time stamped. Mayra in personnel may have some forms for you to be given. There is a Request for Hearing form that must be turned in within seven calendar days.
Come to the Mt. Hamilton Office where you will be given a "Notice of Dissent" form and other materials. You will be assisted in all aspects of the process.
Do not agree to resign if asked to as you will lose rights by doing so!

When teachers get RIF notice, they need to go to District Office and get the “Request for Hearing” form time stamped. They then are to come to Mt. Hamilton with a copy of the notice to request a hearing within 7 days and they will fill out forms which are placed in a folder.

The CTA lawyer will deal with these issues. This process will make certain that a correct order for rehire is done correctly.

Sierramont MS (Dave Pousho)à Concern regarding student seen as potentially volatile and the request of an elective teacher that he not be scheduled to be in Home Ec class for Trimester 3 where he would have access to cutlery. Request to have him rescheduled to another elective. SMS administrators had not yet taken preventive action. Action: Joyce will talk to Jack.
Majestic Way (Sandra Main)à Site administrator has issued a letter to teachers stating that they must make an effort to conference with EVERY parent (by phone if not in person) and to make 2 positive contacts. This goes beyond contract language and it is attempt to carry out yet to be finalized grading policy. This also is happening at Toyon and Vinci Park. Action: Joyce and Elem. Reps will talk to Majestic Way, Vinci Park and Toyon administrators and will raise it in meeting with Marc Liebman.

Joyce Singh has asked me to email you to let you know that the district has already started to give non-reelect notes to temporary and probationary (non-tenured) teachers.

Please let your members who are Probationary and Temporary know that we urge them to contact Joyce Singh immediately if they have any questions or concerns.

Later this week, prior to the March 15th deadline, the district will be giving the notices of tentative assignment for 2008-09 to all members who are continuing. Some members may also be getting RIF (Reduction In Force) notices, based on seniority and the BUSD Board of Trustees approved number of 78.

Obviously, these are important matters and we REALLY need all sites to be represented at the CTAB Rep Council on Tuesday March 11th.

Please encourage members to carefully review the seniority list they recieved on email from Mayra last week to check for accuracy.

REP COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES
Mt. Hamilton, February 12, 2008 3:30 to 5:30 P.M.

Noble (Pamela Thomassen) 4/5 teachers get prep day for conferences, but the DO limits what days they can get subs. Request that the district not plan activities which require subs at the same time Action: Joyce will discuss with Jack/Marc
Cherrywood (Peter Davis)Motion made that Rep Council authorize $5 per member for site reps to spend on treats. Approved unanimously Follow-up: Reps buy the treats and submit receipt for prompt reimbursement to treasurer, Julie Zlatunich (Brooktree) Day of the Teacher is May 6^th.
Sierramont MS (Dave Pousho) Concern regarding student seen as potentially volatile and the request of an elective teacher that he not be scheduled to be in Home Ec class for Trimester 3 where he would have access to cutlery. Request to have him rescheduled to another elective. SMS administrators had not yet taken preventive action. Action: Joyce will talk to Jack.
Majestic Way (Sandra Main) Site administrator has issued a letter to teachers stating that they must make an effort to conference with EVERY parent (by phone if not in person) and to make 2 positive contacts. This goes beyond contract language and it is attempt to carry out yet to be finalized grading policy. This also is happening at Toyon and Vinci Park. Action: Joyce and Elem Reps will talk to Majestic Way, Vinci Park and Toyon administrators and will raise it in meeting with Marc Liebman.

NEA Local Delegate Election

Dear Reps,

We need to correct the dates for the NEA RA Local Delegate Election, due to the fact that the scheduled date of the voting is during Spring Break vacation. The Elections Committee was just passing on what they had been given and fortunately a sharp-eyed Rep saw the date conflict.

Please post this REVISED time line on your CTAB board at your site.

CTAB will be voting for Local Delegates for the NEA Representative Assembly between

March 31 and April 2.
